TWENTY-FOUR

The drawstrings were tied in a knot. Maneuvering to the desk, I cleared a space and used scissors to cut them. Three items fell out—an old medal, a rabbit’s foot, and a beige parchment with writing.

The paper was decorated with a picture of an angel, wings spread. Using the tip of the scythe, I squared it up so I could read the words. It wasn’t in English. “Santé Michael Archangel…” I stared at the rest, nonsensical to me, in Latin. I picked out a few words I could translate—defend, spirit, virtue. There was also God, Satan, and Amen.

“Not exactly what I expected,” I muttered, carefully pushing the medal over to view the other side. My uncle Morty had a similar one on a keychain. “This is Saint Christopher. Your witch is Catholic?” I asked Andy.

His shoulders twitched with a shrug. “Rout row.”

“Don’t know,” the bird echoed.

Dropping into my chair, I typed the first line into a search engine. “Bingo.” Thousands of hits came up, and as I suspected, the top ones referenced Catholicism along with Saint Michael’s prayer. I clicked on a link and read through a long article on the war against sin and combating Satan with the archangel’s help. Another took me to an online version of the prayer.

Even with my limited deciphering skills, I saw some of the words didn’t match up. Perhaps more of the witch’s language that Killion had mentioned? Was it safe to use this stuff?

I toyed with the amulet as I compared the two line by line. The website offered an English version and I searched the terms that didn’t match. A few hits came back, but they were on gaming apps and Reddit. I followed a few of the threads and found one person—avatar: Witch Finger—who seemed more knowledgeable about actual magic and spells than the rest.

Steam floated in from the bathroom. I got up, shut off the shower, and considered the medal and rabbit’s foot. Both were types of talismans, much like the amulet around my neck. “Why would Death carry a protection amulet? And why does it not like this bag?”

The raven cawed and landed in my lap. He pecked at the rabbit’s foot. “Luck.”

The item appeared real. The thought of anyone hurting an innocent bunny to use its feet as lucky charms angered me. I reached for it and the bubble shivered but didn’t stop me as I carefully stroked the white fur. It was soft against my skin; no painful zap or change in the bubble. “Would it be too much to ask for her to have included instructions?”

The raven cackled, then snatched up the medal and flew to the bed.

“Hey, not yours.”

“Keepers. Finders.” He ran when I came after it, keeping it in his mouth as he dashed for the closet.

“It’s finders keepers.” I tried bribing him to relinquish it, but he was stubborn. Corvids loved shiny things and were known as hoarders.

I considered threatening him with the scythe, but he already knew I’d never hurt him.
